Anthropic, the AI startup backed by Alphabet’s Google and Amazon, is entering the Indian market. It has announced plans to open its first office in India, located in the country’s tech hub, Bengaluru. With this move, the AI research startup aims to strengthen its global presence as competition heats up with major players like OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, and Meta.
Anthropic co-founder Dario Amodei is visiting India this week to highlight the company’s commitment to building responsible AI systems that promote social good and economic growth, as per the company’s blogpost. “India is compelling because of the scale of its technical talent and the commitment from the Indian government to ensure the benefits of artificial intelligence reach all areas of society, not just concentrated pockets,” said Dario. “There is deep alignment between the challenges India is tackling and our mission as a company, from deploying AI across diverse languages and contexts, to building frameworks for responsible governance. India’s AI ecosystem will play a central role in how AI develops globally and democratically, and we’re looking forward to working with organizations in India to pave a path for how beneficial AI can be scaled in a way that serves everyone.”
In India, the startup plans to focus on leveraging AI for social impact across sectors such as education, healthcare, and agriculture, while also aiding key industries through strategic collaborations with Indian businesses, nonprofits, and startups. The Bengaluru office will play a role in strengthening India’s entrepreneurial ecosystem as it nurtures the next generation of innovative companies.
Anthropic’s entry into India aligns with its ongoing efforts to enhance Claude’s capabilities in Indic languages. Developing strong support for the languages and contexts most relevant to Indian users will be a key focus in the region. Claude already supports major Indic languages and will soon offer improved performance in Hindi, along with nearly a dozen others, including Bengali, Marathi, Telugu, Tamil, Punjabi, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, and Urdu. These expanded features aim to boost adoption in the public sector and make AI more accessible across India.
Anthropic’s announcement follows OpenAI’s recent plan to launch its first office in India, in New Delhi, later this year, highlighting India’s rising significance in the global AI arena.
