Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that the India Jewellery Park Mumbai project at Mahape, Navi Mumbai, is planned with an investment of approximately ₹50,000 crore and is expected to generate employment for 100,000 people, as construction on the project began the same day.
“An investment of approximately ₹50,000 crore is planned, creating employment opportunities for 100,000 people,” Fadnavis told reporters at the construction launch, which was also attended by Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council Chairman Kirit Bhansali.
The 21.3-acre project will offer manufacturing space for large and medium businesses, with floor plates ranging from 1,000 to 25,000 square feet. Fadnavis described the project as a strategic step toward strengthening India’s jewellery manufacturing infrastructure and said Mumbai and Maharashtra have the skilled workforce, entrepreneurial tradition, business networks, and industrial ecosystem needed to become a major global destination for jewellery manufacturing and exports.
“Our Prime Minister envisions India becoming a global leader in the gems and jewellery sector. Under his leadership, India is already among the world’s leading nations in this field, but we aim to achieve much more. This project will play a crucial role in reaching that goal,” Fadnavis said.
Mumbai currently accounts for 69% of India’s total gem and jewellery exports, and the state government has said it will extend all necessary assistance to ensure the project progresses without delays. An earlier Ratnagiri jewellery training and skilling centre has already been set up to help feed skilled workers into the upcoming park.
