IndiGo is on track to hire about 1,000 pilots in the current fiscal year, which the airline and industry trackers say would be the largest single-year pilot intake by any Indian carrier. The hiring push follows the December 2025 flight disruptions and the implementation of revised Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL) norms earlier this year.
As per an Economic Times report, the hiring drive is one of the biggest ever undertaken by an Indian carrier. The airline intends to reach a total addition of about 1,000 pilots by March-end, building on about 600 pilots added earlier in 2026. An inquiry into the December crisis had found the carrier required 2,422 captains to maintain operations but had only 2,357 available at the time.
IndiGo’s own annual report pegged its total pilot count at 5,786 as of 31 March 2026, up from 5,456 a year earlier. The planned addition of close to 1,000 in FY27 would represent a sharp step-up over the 330-pilot net addition recorded in FY26.
IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers and non-executive chairman Willie Walsh have publicly tied the hiring drive to the FDTL compliance deadline and the need to rebuild standby capacity after the December meltdown. Government data presented in Parliament shows IndiGo already operates the largest pilot workforce in the country at over 5,200 people, including nearly 1,000 women pilots.
