The Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) has notified 17 gazetted holidays for Central Government offices in Delhi and New Delhi for 2027, and each employee may also avail any two of the 32 restricted holidays during the year.

Five of these dates fall on a Saturday or Sunday in 2027, covering six named occasions since Independence Day and Milad-un-Nabi coincide on August 15: Mahatma Gandhi’s Birthday (Saturday), Dussehra (Saturday) and Christmas Day (Saturday) also land on weekends, alongside Guru Nanak’s Birthday (Sunday). Per standard DoPT practice, no substitute holiday is permitted when a gazetted holiday falls on a weekly off.

For offices located outside Delhi and New Delhi, 14 of the 17 holidays are compulsory nationwide, among them Republic Day, Independence Day, Mahatma Gandhi’s Birthday, Buddha Purnima, Christmas Day, Dussehra, Diwali, Good Friday, Guru Nanak’s Birthday, Id-ul-Fitr, Id-ul-Zuha, Mahavir Jayanti, Muharram and Id-e-Milad.

The Central Government Employees Welfare Coordination Committee at each state capital will choose the remaining three from a notified set of 12 optional occasions, and the final list will apply uniformly across that state’s Central Government offices for the year.

Each employee may additionally avail any two of the 32 restricted holidays listed in Annexure II of the same memorandum, subject to approval from their controlling officer; these days cannot be carried forward, combined beyond two, or exchanged for cash. The restricted list includes widely observed regional and festival occasions such as New Year’s Day, Makar Sankranti, Pongal, Maha Shivratri, Ugadi, Vaisakhi, Rath Yatra, Raksha Bandhan, Ganesh Chaturthi, Onam, Karwa Chauth, Chhath Puja and Christmas Eve.

The DoPT list applies to Central Government offices, public sector undertakings and nationalised banks. Private employers are not bound by it, though many Indian companies use it as a reference calendar when finalising their own 2027 holiday lists and floating-holiday policies, alongside state government notifications that typically add further regional and festival dates.
