Wipro is rolling out a productivity-tracking tool called TimeScope on company-issued laptops and desktops in India, giving employees and managers a dashboard of digital activity and time spent on work applications, according to reports by Mint carried on 2 September 2026.

The software can flag inactive periods and may trigger a leave deduction when there is no device login, approved leave, office swipe or client-site visit recorded for a scheduled working day. Wipro began deploying the tool to about 5,000 employees around May and is now expanding it across the workforce.

According to an internal email reviewed by Mint, TimeScope logs login duration and inactive time on Wipro devices. Its “active time” covers work applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Chrome, with the data visible to both employees and managers through a dashboard. The rollout extends across fixed-price projects, billable and support roles, and staff not currently deployed on projects.

The company has drawn some lines around what the tool does not do. It has clarified that TimeScope does not monitor personal activity, keystrokes or screen content, and that timesheets remain the final record for effort reporting. Its internal FAQ says employees can contest incorrectly recorded leave.

The move follows similar reported developments at other IT majors. According to the reports, TCS had deployed a tool capable of showing applications used and time spent, though TCS denied tracking individual employee activity and said its systems monitor network performance. Cognizant has featured in comparable reporting. Together, the developments point to a sector-wide tilt toward closer measurement of working time.

The rollout is tied to client demands and the industry’s shift toward outcome-based projects and AI-led efficiency, per the reports. The financial backdrop is tight: the company posted a 16% operating margin in the April-June quarter, down 130 basis points year-on-year, with revenue having declined for three straight years.

The tracker touches a live nerve in Indian IT, where debates over long notice periods, return-to-office mandates and now activity monitoring have kept workplace conditions in the spotlight. Employee reaction to attendance-linked leave deductions will be a key test of how the rollout is received.
