PayPal has laid off around 600 employees in India, roughly 10% of its local workforce, as part of a broader global restructuring aimed at cutting costs, according to a Moneycontrol report on 3 September 2026.

The cuts hit staff across Chennai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad, spanning technology, engineering, operations, payments and finance teams. PayPal had more than 6,000 employees in India, so the reduction works out to about a tenth of its headcount in the country.

The layoffs began with calls to affected employees on the morning of 31 August. One employee told Moneycontrol that access to company systems was revoked immediately after the termination call ended. Some staff were let go over email. Those affected have been offered one month’s salary as severance and job-placement support, though several said they were still waiting on final settlement details.

PayPal confirmed the restructuring without specifying India numbers: “The recent staffing changes are part of our previously announced multi-year transformation to simplify our global operations, strengthen execution, and position the company for long-term growth,” a company spokesperson said. “Decisions like these are never easy. We recognise the impact they have on our employees and are committed to supporting them through this transition.”

The India cuts fit into a plan announced in May 2026, when PayPal said it would reduce its global workforce by about 20% over two to three years, targeting at least $1.5 billion in gross run-rate savings. The company had roughly 23,800 employees worldwide at the end of 2025.

India is central to PayPal’s global technology setup. The company opened its first development centre in Chennai in 2008, and its Bengaluru and Hyderabad operations support machine learning, artificial intelligence, fraud prevention, risk management and data science. That makes the country one of its largest engineering bases outside the United States.

The layoffs land in a wider wave of fintech and tech cost-cutting. Throughout 2026, global technology firms have announced large workforce reductions, with AI-led efficiency and cost discipline cited repeatedly as drivers. PayPal has trimmed staff several times in recent years, including global rounds in early 2023 and 2024.
