Mahindra & Mahindra plans to set up a dedicated skilling centre in Nagpur to build the workforce for its largest integrated manufacturing facility, the company said as it moved to take possession of the first 800 acres of the project on 2 September 2026.
The skilling centre will train talent across mechanical operations, welding, painting and related trades. It sits alongside a greenfield plant being built at Additional Butibori in Nagpur, spread across roughly 1,500 acres in the Vidarbha region. A separate 150-acre supplier park is planned at Sambhajinagar to feed components to the new site and to Mahindra’s existing plants at Chakan and Nashik.
Once fully operational, the facility will have an annual capacity of more than 5 lakh vehicles and 1 lakh tractors, making it Mahindra’s biggest integrated manufacturing base in India. Production is scheduled to begin in 2028.
The company framed the skilling push as part of building people capability in step with the plant itself: “Alongside the development of the facility, Mahindra is building the people capabilities and skills required for the project,” it stated, adding that this covers identifying, developing and skilling talent for manufacturing vehicles and tractors across multiple powertrains and future technologies.
Mahindra also plans to draw on associates from its current operations. Over the next two to three years, existing skilled and experienced staff will go through a selection process for roles at the new plant, assessed on technical capability, demonstrated behaviours, alignment with company values and ability to collaborate.
The project carries weight for Maharashtra’s Vidarbha belt, a region that has long trailed the state’s western manufacturing corridor around Pune. The plant was announced earlier in 2026 at the Advantage Vidarbha event, pitched as an effort to turn the area into an industrial hub. For local job-seekers, the skilling centre is the clearest signal yet of how the workforce will be built.
The move also comes weeks after a labour flashpoint nearby. In late August 2026, more than 1,000 temporary workers at Mahindra’s tractor unit in Hingna MIDC, near Nagpur, protested over PF and ESIC benefits, job security and working conditions. How the new facility structures its own workforce, permanent versus contract, will be watched closely in the region.
