Tech Mahindra said it is reviewing allegations from a job applicant who claimed he was subjected to religious abuse by a company recruiter during an interview.

The allegations surfaced after Fazal Sheikh, a Noida-based job seeker, described the experience in a post on X on June 30. Sheikh said he had gone for the interview “with hope” but alleged the interaction turned abusive once the recruiter learnt his name. He alleged the recruiter questioned his identity despite him presenting his Aadhaar card and mocked him over his religion.

Sheikh further alleged that the recruiter remarked that “Muslims are frauds” and later abused a friend on a phone call after the friend intervened on his behalf. He also said he approached the Noida Sector 135 Police Station to file a complaint but was told it was “a small matter” and advised to block the recruiter instead. This account of the police response could also not be independently verified.

Responding to queries, Tech Mahindra said, “We are reviewing the matter with urgency.” The company added that it remains committed to a fair, respectful and merit-based hiring process, has zero tolerance for discriminatory remarks or disrespectful conduct, and that the policy applies to both employees and third-party partners involved in recruitment. It further stated that it is verifying Sheikh’s interview experience and the phone call referenced in his post, and will act on its findings. Tech Mahindra has not disclosed when the review will conclude.

The incident adds to a string of recent controversies over workplace conduct and religious bias at Indian IT and BPO firms, including a widening investigation into alleged harassment at a Tata Consultancy Services unit in Nashik, and an earlier, separate round of viral allegations of religious favouritism at a Tech Mahindra BPO unit in Mumbai, which the company also denied after an internal review.
