The Tripura government has issued a memorandum directing that only 50% of Group C and Group D employees attend office on any given day, with the remaining staff working from home on a rotational basis, as part of austerity measures aimed at reducing fuel consumption and curbing administrative expenditure.
The order, released by the state’s General Administration (Administrative Reforms) Department on May 13, 2026, comes in response to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s nationwide appeal for citizens and institutions to save fuel and adopt work-from-home practices wherever possible amid the ongoing conflict in West Asia.
According to the memorandum signed by A.K. Bhattacharya, Special Secretary to the Government of Tripura, all Heads of Department have been directed to ensure that only half of the Group C and Group D employees attend office daily, while the remainder work remotely. Departments have been instructed to prepare weekly duty rosters for alternate attendance, giving preference in the first phase to employees residing closer to their offices.
Employees working remotely must remain available through telephone and electronic communication and report to the office in case of urgent requirements, the memorandum stated. The order has come into effect immediately and will remain in effect until further notice.
The directive applies not only to government departments but also to public sector undertakings, local bodies, autonomous organisations, statutory bodies, and subordinate offices functioning under the Tripura government. Offices and employees engaged in essential and emergency services, including healthcare and law enforcement, have been exempted.
Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha has separately reduced the size of his official convoy in line with the fuel conservation drive. The state government has framed the package as part of a wider effort to align administrative practices with the national call for resource conservation.
The move makes Tripura among the first state governments to formally codify work-from-home arrangements for a section of government employees following the Prime Minister’s appeal, with similar measures being announced in Delhi and other states in the days that followed.
