The Nascent Information Technology Employees Senate (NITES) wrote to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, claiming that Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) had “illegally” fired nearly 2,500 employees in Pune.

“Sadly, despite this directive, the ground reality has become even more distressing. In Pune alone, nearly 2,500 employees have been forced to resign or have been abruptly removed in recent weeks,” NITES said.

“The abrupt loss of livelihood has created a climate of fear, anxiety, and hopelessness across the IT workforce in Maharashtra,” added Harpreet Singh Saluja, President of NITES.

The claims come after TCS revealed about two months ago that it planned on firing about 2% of its employees, equaling over 12,000 in number. The company claimed that the layoffs were part of its restructuring plans to create a “future-ready” workforce.

However, the layoffs have created much uncertainty amongst IT professionals. Organisations like NITES have been vocal about their disagreement with the company’s plans, while government entities seem resolved to keep a close eye on the developing situation to ensure all procedures are being followed properly.

As for the 2,500 layoffs reported by NITES in Pune, TCS has categorically denied the claims.

“The misinformation shared here is inaccurate and purposefully mischievous. Only a limited number of employees have been affected by our recent initiative to realign skills in our organisation,” TCS stated.

This is far from the first time that TCS has denied any claims regarding layoffs. Only a few days back, claims had surfaced that TCS was actually laying off 80,000 employees, which the company promptly denied.
