Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) is certainly under heightened scrutiny given its announcement of laying off 12,000 employees.
As such, when an X (formerly Twitter) user claimed that the company was laying off 80,000 people, the internet was rightfully concerned.
An X user named Soham Sarkar claimed that his college friend, who has reportedly worked at TCS for 15 years, said that around 80,000 employees were asked to resign. Some reportedly received 18 months of severance pay, while others received as little as three months of termination pay, and some received no compensation at all.

Though the claim was not backed by any credible source, it quickly gained the attention of the professionals online, many claiming that this did not surprise them.
However, TCS was quick to deny the claim, stating that the news of the company laying off 80,000 employees was “inaccurate.”
“These speculations are incorrect and misleading. As communicated earlier, the impact is limited to 2% of our workforce,” a TCS spokesperson stated.
The statement refers to the layoff reveal made by K Krithivasan, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), at TCS, during an interview with Moneycontrol.
“We expect it will be about 2% of the global workforce, mostly in the middle and senior levels. We may have to let them go because most importantly, the effectiveness of deployment or feasibility of deployment is not possible,” Krithivasan had stated.
With Indian professionals already on the edge, the claims of an increased number of layoffs do tend to gain more traction and support. While TCS was quick to deny the claims, the speed with which people believed the exaggerated claim highlights how much people’s trust in TCS has decreased.
