Tata Steel will invest Rs 10,000 crore in its Jharkhand operations by 2028, a move the company says will create 2,000 direct and indirect jobs across the state.

The investment includes Rs 7,000 crore directed toward HIsarna and Easy Melting Technology, part of the company’s push toward low-emission steelmaking routes. A further Rs 2,600 crore is earmarked for expanding the Tinplate Division, while Rs 1,500 crore will go into the Combi mill. The plans are aimed at helping Tata Steel scale its India steelmaking capacity from the current 27.35 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to 40 MTPA.

Tata Steel’s Chief of Corporate Communication, Sarvesh Kumar, confirmed the scope of the investment to media: “Tata Steel is committed to invest Rs 10,000 crore in its Jharkhand projects, including Rs 7,000 crore in HIsarna and Easy Melting Technology by 2028. In total, the investment will create 2,000 direct and indirect jobs,” he said.

The announcement adds to Tata Steel’s broader Jharkhand footprint, where the company already operates 11 MTPA of steelmaking capacity at Jamshedpur and 1 MTPA at Gamharia. Group chairman N Chandrasekaran has previously pointed to Jamshedpur as a testbed for next-generation, low-carbon steelmaking that could eventually support wider adoption of advanced production methods across the industry.

For Jharkhand’s job market, the announcement lands at a moment when the state is competing hard with Odisha and Chhattisgarh for large industrial investment and the employment that comes with it. Tata Steel’s consolidated capacity already exceeds 36 MTPA across India, the Netherlands, and Thailand, and the company has said it aims to cross 50 MTPA globally over the long term, with most of that growth concentrated in India.
