Labour tensions have resurfaced at Samsung’s manufacturing facility near Chennai, with a section of employees signalling plans to escalate protests over the removal of certain workers from active duty.

Members of the Samsung India Employees Union, affiliated with the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), have renewed demonstrations seeking the reinstatement of suspended employees. The union has warned of possible strike action if its demands remain unresolved, raising concerns about fresh disruptions at the plant, as per The Hindu.

The latest developments follow disciplinary action taken against a group of workers earlier, a move the union has strongly opposed. As part of the ongoing agitation, employees recently organised protest activities, including a hunger strike, ahead of mediation discussions involving company representatives and state government officials.

Sources indicate that while the suspended workers continue to receive salaries, the union maintains that they should be allowed to resume duties immediately. The dispute adds to a series of labour-management disagreements at the facility, which has witnessed multiple protests and work stoppages in recent years.

The renewed agitation comes at a sensitive time, increasing pressure on both management and authorities to find a negotiated resolution. Previous negotiations between workers and the company have seen mixed outcomes, highlighting persistent tensions around workplace policies and employee representation at the Chennai plant.
