The Ministry of Railways has issued a nationwide advisory cautioning railway employees and pensioners against a surge in cyber fraud attempts targeting them through impersonation scams.
According to the advisory, fraudsters have been posing as railway officials and contacting individuals through phone calls, SMS and WhatsApp messages, attempting to extract sensitive financial and personal information. Authorities warned that scammers often use official-sounding communication and create urgency to mislead victims into sharing confidential details.
Railway officials clarified that no authorised representative seeks bank account information, OTPs, passwords or other sensitive data through digital platforms or phone calls. The ministry also emphasised that employees and pensioners should not respond to messages requesting updates related to pension payment orders (PPO), service records or KYC verification through unofficial links.
The alert comes amid a rise in cybercrime incidents targeting senior citizens, particularly pensioners, who are considered more vulnerable to such schemes. Authorities have urged beneficiaries to remain vigilant, avoid clicking on suspicious links, and immediately report suspected fraud attempts to the appropriate cybercrime channels.
The Railways said awareness and prompt reporting remain critical to preventing financial losses and limiting the spread of fraudulent activities.
