OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, has announced plans to open its first office in India, set to be located in New Delhi later this year. While ChatGPT continues to create waves globally, India stands out as the second-largest market after the US and one of the fastest-growing. In fact, the platform’s weekly active users in India have quadrupled over the past year.
The company has already registered in India and begun hiring for a local team. OpenAI said the move aligns with the IndiaAI Mission and reflects its commitment to partnering with the Indian government to develop AI solutions both for India and with India.
“The level of excitement and opportunity for AI in India is incredible. India has all ingredients to become a global AI leader—amazing tech talent, a world-class developer ecosystem, and strong government support through the India AI Mission,” Sam Altman, co-founder and chief executive at OpenAI, said in a statement. “Opening our first office and building a local team is an important first step in our commitment to make advanced AI more accessible across the country and to build AI for India, and with India.”
India’s IT Minister, Ashwini Vaishnaw, welcomed the announcement, noting that OpenAI’s entry underscores India’s leadership in digital innovation and AI adoption. He emphasized that the country is building a trusted and inclusive AI ecosystem to benefit every citizen, and OpenAI’s partnership will support this vision.
As part of its India plans, OpenAI is set to host its first Education Summit in India later this month, followed by its inaugural Developer Day in the country later this year.
