Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) is in touch with the Tata Group to keep an eye on the developing layoffs of over 12,000 Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), as per the Press Trust of India (PTI).
The ministry’s concerns have become evident after TCS recently revealed its plans to let go of about 2% of its workforce, which will amount to just over 12,000 workers. The company has stated this as a move to adapt to future skills needs, with a focus on investments in technology, AI deployment, market expansion, and workforce realignment.
“Significant part of this will be in the middle and the senior levels. At the bottom of the pyramid, if somebody has been on the bench for a long period of time, they probably will be impacted. But, it’s primarily in the middle and senior level,” K Krithivasan, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), at TCS, elaborated during an interview with Moneycontrol.
Concerned unions like the Nascent Information Technology Employees Senate (NITES) and the Forum for IT Employees (FITE) have also voiced their protests against the layoffs. NITES has even written to Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya to voice their thoughts on the new development.
