May 2025 saw a sharp rise in job postings in India at 8.9% as per Indeed.

With the number declining for the last eight consecutive months, the recent rise in job postings indicates the growing demand for talent in India. Compared to May 2024, job postings in May 2025 decreased by 1.8% and are 16% below the peak levels. However, it’s still 80% higher than the numbers before the pandemic.

“Indian job creation continues to outpace other countries because of the nation’s transition towards more formal economic arrangements,” Callam Pickering, APAC Senior Economist at Indeed, said in a statement. “As the nation transitions, job creation across the formal sector will be much stronger than overall employment growth nationwide, and we have consistently seen that in recent years. Other economies are not going through a transition of this nature.”

The report also indicated that the number of job postings in India is much higher than in the United Kingdom, New Zealand, and Switzerland.

According to the data collected over the last three months by Indeed, job postings increased across nearly 80% of occupations in India. The biggest jump was seen in childcare at 27%, followed by personal care and home health at 25%. Education roles saw an increase of 24% while jobs listings in production and manufacturing rose by 22%.

During the same time period, job listings in dental roles decreased by 10.2%, while agriculture and forestry saw a decline of 8.6%. Community and social service position listings went down by 6.8%, followed by software development at 4.2%. That said, software development is still the largest job category on Indeed for India, with every 1 out of 5 job listings on the platform belonging to said sector.

In the report, Indeed also sheds light on the increase in Generative AI (GenAI) related job postings. In May 2025, about 1.5% of all the listings on the platform mentioned GenAI, which is twice as much as last year. The most prevalent reference to GenAI is within the data analytics (12.5%), software development (3.6%), and scientific research (3.1%). Marketing roles (1.1%) and management positions (0.9%) now also include mentions of GenAI in their listings.

On a geographic scale, Karnataka is leading the charge in GenAI reference in job postings at 2.4%, with Telangana close behind at 2.3%. Though most job listings on Indeed for May 2025 have come from Maharashtra, only about 1% of them mentioned GenAI.

“India’s job creation story is now closely linked to both structural economic reforms and digital transformation. The opportunity lies in scaling talent development to match the pace of change,” Pickering stated.
