Infosys paid an average variable payout of 70% to eligible employees for the first quarter of FY27, according to people familiar with the matter. The figure is unchanged from the fourth quarter but lower than the 80% paid for the same period a year earlier.

The payout covered employees across job levels, with the amount ranging between 65% and 80% depending on grade. Staff at job levels 4 and 5 received higher payouts than those at level 6, indicating that the distribution favoured mid-level roles.

The flat quarter-on-quarter payout signals that pressures on the IT services sector have continued rather than eased. Companies have navigated a low-revenue environment and macroeconomic volatility, with discretionary client spending remaining subdued across large accounts.

Infosys reported constant-currency growth of 3.1% for FY26 and issued FY27 operating margin guidance of 20% to 22%. The variable pay component is linked to company, unit, and individual performance, and shifts in the average payout are closely tracked as an indicator of business conditions and employee sentiment.

The reduction from 80% a year earlier translates into lower take-home earnings for a large share of the workforce, even as the quarter-on-quarter stability offers some predictability. Variable pay decisions at Infosys are watched as a bellwether for peers, given the company’s scale and its position among India’s largest IT employers.
