According to a NLB Services report, India’s green economy is growing rapidly and will likely reach $1 trillion by 2030 and $15 trillion by 2070.

With the rising green economy, India is also paving the path for new jobs in the sector. By financial year 2027-2028, the country is set to create 7.29 million green jobs and 35 million by 2047, as per the report.

“In the past 4–5 years, we’ve seen green jobs evolve from niche roles to mainstream opportunities across renewable energy, EVs, and sustainable infrastructure. What’s changed pragmatically is the skillsets,” Sachin Alug, CEO of NLB Services, stated. “Today’s green workforce needs both sustainability know-how and digital fluency, and the increased integration of AI, IoT, blockchain, GIS, and data-driven tools are laying the foundation for progressive, new-age green careers.”

With the expansion in the green sector, companies across India are investing in green technology and renewable energy, all the while building a skilled workforce that can meet the rising demand. This has caused a shift in hiring strategies, with companies relying more and more on practical green skills and hands-on experience rather than traditional degrees.

As per the report, many companies are now working closely with colleges and universities to equip young people with sustainability-related skills, while also investing in inclusive hiring and re-skilling programmes.

The green economy in India is growing faster than most had expected. In 2024, the green sector was only expected to grow by 15–20% per year. However, more recent data shows an even faster rate of increase in areas like renewable energy, electric vehicles, green construction, waste management, and sustainable textiles.

Presently, most green jobs are still based in big cities like Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Delhi. However, smaller cities like Jaipur, Indore, Visakhapatnam, Coimbatore, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, and Ahmedabad are also making impressive strides in the area. In fact, tier II and tier III cities are expected to create 35-40 % of the projected 7.29 million jobs by FY28, with the help of growth in sustainable agriculture, logistics, and warehousing, as per the report.

With the expansion of the green economy, green job roles are also becoming more diverse. Demand for professionals in areas such as ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) analytics, climate data analysis, and green technology is growing fast, with a projected 20–30% yearly rise.
