Eternal, the parent company of Zomato and Blinkit, is set to celebrate its 17th birthday with a green wave.
“On Eternal’s 17th birthday, we’re planting something that’ll outlive all of us. Today, I’m happy to share something close to my heart — Greening India,” said Eternal’s Founder and CEO, Deepinder Goyal. “This is not just a project. It’s a quiet promise to the Earth, and to India’s farmers.”
As a part of the Greening India initiative, Eternal aims to plant 2.5 million trees across 10,000 acres of land. Eternal believes that these trees will pull out 1.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide out of the air over the next 30 years. “That’s like taking over 3 lakh petrol cars off the road for a year,” Goyal compared.
However, Greening India is not just about environmental conservation. Through this initiative, Eternal also aims to help thousands of farmers by planting trees in farmlands. “Done well, agroforestry (which is just a fancy word for combining trees with farming) can boost farmer incomes by 50% to 200% over time — depending on what’s planted, where, and how it’s sold,” Goyal explained.
In fact, Eternal has already partnered with over 2000 farmers across the states of Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and Punjab. The Greening India initiative is already active on over 4,500 acres of land, and the company is looking forward to expanding it further. If all goes to plan, Eternal believes that they will be able to achieve their target number of trees planted by the end of FY26 and then see positive carbon credits from FY28.
In his statement, Goyal emphasised Eternal’s commitment to a greener world. “We were one of the first companies in India to switch to EV deliveries at scale. Today, more than 50,000 delivery partners across Zomato and Blinkit use electric vehicles — cutting per km emissions by over 10% since 2022. For the last three years, we’ve also made all food deliveries carbon neutral by buying credits from clean energy projects in India,” he added.
With a desire to give back to the world, Greening India is Eternal’s way to create a cleaner environment while helping those who work hard to bring food to our tables.
