The Delhi government has announced a mandatory two-day work-from-home arrangement for all its employees every week, as part of a 90-day fuel conservation and austerity campaign titled “Mera Bharat Mera Yogdan Abhiyan”, which came into effect on May 15, 2026.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced the measures at a press conference on May 14, citing rising global energy concerns and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent appeal to citizens to adopt responsible fuel usage amid the ongoing West Asia crisis. Guidelines for the private sector will be released separately, the Chief Minister said, with the Labour Department designated as the nodal body to monitor implementation through a single helpline.
Under the new directive, all Delhi government employees will work remotely on two specified days every week to reduce commuting-related fuel use. Departments have been directed to conduct nearly half of all official meetings virtually to minimise travel. Office timings for Delhi government departments will run from 10:30 am to 7 pm, while Municipal Corporation of Delhi offices will operate from 8:30 am to 5 pm, with staggered timings aimed at easing peak-hour congestion.
The monthly petrol allocation for officers and government vehicles has been cut by 20%, bringing a 200-litre limit down to 160 litres and a 250-litre limit down to 200 litres. The government has also announced that no new petrol, diesel, or CNG vehicles will be purchased for the next six months.
Every Monday has been designated as “Metro Monday”, with ministers, officers, and employees required to commute by Delhi Metro. The government will deploy 58 special buses across 29 government colonies to improve last-mile connectivity, and the transport allowance for government employees has been raised from 25% to 35% of basic pay to encourage a shift to public transport.
The Delhi rollout follows similar work-from-home directives issued by the Tripura government earlier in the week. The Central Secretariat Service Forum, representing officers in the central secretariat, has also urged the Department of Personnel and Training to issue formal guidelines on remote work for union ministries.
