Even though the TikTok ban in India has been in place since 2020 and the app is still unavailable on Google Play and the App Store, buzz has emerged that parent company ByteDance is hiring again in the country. The company recently listed two roles on LinkedIn for its Gurgaon office: Content Moderator (Bengali Speaker), Trust and Safety and Wellbeing Partnership and Operations Lead, Trust and Safety.
The first position is for reviewing and filtering TikTok content to ensure it meets community guidelines. The job includes dealing with sensitive posts, removing harmful material, and helping keep the platform safe for users. Applicants should be fluent in English and Bengali, understand online regulations and cultural context, and ideally hold a graduate degree.
The second role, Wellbeing Partnership and Operations Lead, Trust and Safety, is a senior position focused on supporting employee wellbeing across TikTok’s regional teams. It involves creating wellbeing programmes, working with partner organisations, and ensuring all efforts follow global standards and policies.
Once boasting nearly 200 million users in India, TikTok was banned along with 58 other Chinese apps over national security and data privacy concerns following border tensions with China. Officials have since reiterated that the ban remains in force, despite reports of limited website access. Although the ban continues, ByteDance’s fresh hiring suggests it is keeping a presence in India.
ByteDance’s hiring news comes alongside Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit, where both leaders pledged to strengthen bilateral ties
