Shiv Shankar Mitra, the chief manager of Bank of Baroda’s branch in Baramati, Pune, died by suicide. The senior bank official cited “bank work pressure” as a reason in his last note, reigniting a fervent conversation around the topic.
Mitra, a 52-year-old from Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh, was found dead on the bank premises on July 17, 2025. As per the police, Mitra had asked his coworkers to leave for the day, stating that he would be closing the bank that day. By 9:30 PM, even the security guard had left the premises, leaving Mitra alone.
“At approximately 10 pm, Mitra hanged himself from the ceiling using the rope,” the police revealed, adding that the incident was captured by the bank’s CCTV cameras. “When he did not return home or respond to calls, his wife went to the bank around midnight. On finding the lights on and getting no response, she alerted other staff members. When the branch was opened, Mitra was found hanging.”
“Mitra worked as a chief manager at the Bank of Baroda in Baramati. He had submitted his resignation on July 11, 2025, citing health issues and work pressure. We have received a copy of his resignation letter from the bank,” said Police Inspector Vilas Nale of Baramati City Police Station. “He has not blamed any bank officials in his suicide note. He stated that he was ending his life due to bank work pressure. As per the legal procedure, we have filed an accidental death report and further investigation is on in this case.”
At the time of his passing, Mitra was serving his notice period, having submitted his resignation only days prior. In his note, he stated that every bank employee was contributing their best and that the bank should not be putting too much pressure on them. Mitra also apologised to his wife and daughter in the note and stated that he wanted his eyes to be donated after his passing.
While the police do not suspect any foul play at the moment, the investigation into Mitra’s death is still in progress.
“Barodians are deeply shocked by the sad demise of our colleague – Shri Shiv Shanker Mitra. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family. Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this trying time. We are providing full support and assistance to his family,” said Bank of Baroda in a statement on X (formerly Twitter).
“Employee Wellness is a Predominant Priority for our Bank, and various schemes have been initiated to make it a healthy workplace. We also run a comprehensive Employee Assistance Programme to take care of the health and well-being of the employees and their family members. We would like to affirm that our Barodian people and their Wellness remain our Topmost Priority,” the bank went on to add.
