Axis Bank, India’s third-largest private-sector lender, plans to step up campus hiring to around 12,500 in FY27 from 11,500 to 11,600 in FY26, even as artificial intelligence adoption and workforce reorientation shrink the need for some transaction-processing roles.
The overall employee base at the bank declined by 3,116 to 101,337 in FY26 from 104,453 a year earlier, despite gross intake of 31,665 employees during the year. Attrition eased to 22.4% in FY26 from 25.5% a year earlier, aided by broader internal mobility and updated internal processes.
“From a campus perspective, we are the largest consumer of young talent. Our entire bet is to get people young, train them, assimilate them and grow them adequately,” Rajkamal Vempati, Group Executive and Head of Human Resources at Axis Bank, said.
Technology hiring will account for a small share of the planned campus intake, with around 150 to 200 of the roughly 12,000 hires expected to be in technology, according to Business Standard’s briefing summary. The larger requirement will span business and customer-facing roles, risk, compliance, audit and cybersecurity. About 65% of employee movement at the bank is now internal, compared with an industry level Vempati pegged at 25 to 30%.
“The roles that would have been extinguished would be in some transaction processing, low-level stuff that we feel technology has been able to do. Newer roles are emerging,” Vempati explained.
