And yet, if you sit with any HR leader in a mid-market Indian company and ask them how much they actually trust the AI running in their hiring pipeline or performance dashboards, the answer shifts. Capterra’s India survey found that 58% of Indian HR software purchases in 2024 were driven primarily by security concerns, and 54% of HR leaders say assessing AI’s value and risks remains a challenge.

That’s not the profile of an industry buying AI with a clear strategic mandate; it’s the profile of an industry buying AI because not buying felt riskier.

It’s a model that is straightforward to replicate, and far more credible than any vendor promise of a bias-free algorithm.

Align Leadership Behaviour

Leaders need to visibly trust AI, use it in decision-making, and resist the temptation to bypass it when it’s inconvenient. With 37% of Indian organisations still lacking AI governance frameworks, the shift now isn’t about championing more adoption. It’s about championing accountable adoption. Employees will trust AI roughly to the degree that their leaders do.

The Road Ahead: From Adoption to Acceptance

The next phase for Indian HR isn’t about buying more tools. It’s about building the scaffolding that turns adoption into acceptance.

The momentum is structural, not cyclical. The SHRM 2026 CHRO Priorities and Perspectives Report found that 92% of CHROs expect deeper AI integration into the workforce in 2026, and 87% expect broader AI adoption within HR processes (up from 83% in 2025).

AI is not going to retreat from the Indian HR sector. What will change is whether it earns the trust to match the scale.

Success will depend on three areas where Indian organisations have been underinvesting: transparency in how AI decisions are made, training that goes beyond tool use, and cultural alignment between AI systems and the high-context workplaces where they’re deployed. These aren’t vendor problems. They’re organisational ones.
