Indian steelmaker Tata Steel has announced an ambitious goal to achieve 20% diverse representation in its workforce by 2028, strengthening its longstanding commitment to equity and inclusion. The announcement marks the 10th anniversary of MOSAIC, the company’s flagship Diversity & Inclusion (D&I) initiative launched in 2015. MOSAIC is built on five strategic pillars: Recruitment, Sensitisation, Retention & Development, Infrastructure, and Celebration. The initiative is designed to address the distinct needs of diverse groups, including women, persons with disabilities, the LGBTQIA+ community, and individuals from Affirmative Action communities.
The new target by Tata Steel aims to boost representation of women, LGBTQIA+ individuals, persons with disabilities, and members of affirmative action communities across its Indian operations. Tata Steel’s progressive HR policies include equal benefits for LGBTQIA+ partners, gender-neutral parental leave, support for gender transition, and inclusive relocation and travel assistance.
By FY24, Tata Steel had already made notable strides, with women comprising over 25% of managerial roles and several all-women shifts operating in its mining and manufacturing units, marking a significant shift in traditionally male-dominated sectors. In 2023, Tata Steel was recognised as a Global Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) Lighthouse by the World Economic Forum—standing out as the only Indian company among the eight selected globally. In 2024, it earned the Gold Employer status from the India Workplace Equality Index (IWEI) for the fourth consecutive year, in recognition of its inclusive initiatives across gender, sexual orientation, and disability.
Atrayee Sanyal, Chief People Officer, Tata Steel, said: “For over a century, Tata Steel has been a pioneer in people-centric HR policies, consistently evolving with the times to stay not only relevant but also purpose-driven. Our commitment has always been to foster a more equitable and inclusive workplace – one where individuals are valued for who they are and empowered to contribute meaningfully. At the heart of our approach lies a deep belief in diversity and in creating an ecosystem where everyone can thrive and bring their best, most creative selves to work. This year, as we celebrate the 10th anniversary of MOSAIC – our diversity and inclusion journey that began in 2015 – we do so with even greater clarity, conviction, and commitment than when we first set out.”
