Wipro’s headcount fell by 6,716 employees in the July to September 2026 quarter (Q2 FY27), taking its total workforce to 2,36,328 from 2,43,044 at the end of June. It’s the IT services company’s biggest quarterly decline in recent quarters, a 2.8% drop sequentially. In Q1 FY27, Wipro had added 888 employees.

What Wipro’s CHRO said

Asked whether Wipro was planning further optimisation, Chief Human Resources Officer Saurabh Govil told Deccan Herald that headcount should be viewed as part of the company’s total people supply chain.

“We have driven some productivity in the quarter, but we continue to hire depending on the demand environment. We want to hire for certain skills. We are going back to the campuses now in H2 to hire. This will keep going up and down, but we are currently very focused on driving productivity and ensuring that supply is not a constraint moving forward.”

On the earnings call, Govil said headcount was flattish year-on-year and that Wipro doesn’t go to campuses in the first half of the year. He added that direct productivity from AI projects is also playing a role. On pay, he said Wipro rolled out its salary increase effective March 2026, and another hike isn’t under consideration right now.

The quarter’s business numbers

Wipro’s consolidated net profit fell 1.4% year-on-year to ₹3,200.6 crore, and 4.5% from Q1. Revenue from operations rose 9.1% to ₹24,752.7 crore.

IT services revenue came in at $2.61 billion. That’s flat sequentially and up 0.6% year-on-year in constant currency. Operating margin for IT services improved by 50 basis points to 16.5%. Wipro closed $2.6 billion in total contract value and signed nine large deals in the quarter.

CEO and Managing Director Srini Pallia said on the call that clients remain focused on efficiency and productivity while looking to speed up AI adoption.

“This balance between efficiency and growth is shaping demand across industries.”

Pallia also said Wipro’s AI native unit, launched in April 2026, has over 2,000 engineers. On acquisitions such as MindSprint and HARMAN DTS, he said: “We will continue to make these investments even when they create near term margin headwinds.”

Outlook for Q3

Wipro expects IT services revenue of $2,571 million to $2,625 million in Q3 FY27, a sequential change of -1.5% to +0.5% in constant currency. The company said seasonal furloughs will weigh on the quarter. Pallia said two large deals that slipped from Q2 because of delayed paperwork are expected to be signed in Q3.

Wipro will report its Q3 FY27 results in January 2027, when the impact of second-half campus hiring on headcount should become visible.
