Job postings for Forward Deployed Engineers (FDEs) in India grew nearly 19-fold between June 2025 and June 2026, according to data released by hiring platform Indeed.

The growth was gradual through early 2026 before accelerating sharply from March, with postings rising 1,807% year-on-year in June. Demand moderated after that peak, but Indeed data shows postings remained nearly 16 times higher year-on-year in July and more than six times higher in August, suggesting the role has become a structural part of how Indian technology services firms deploy AI with enterprise clients.

“FDE may be a new title for many people, but the need behind it is easy to understand: companies want engineers who can sit with a customer, unpack a real problem and make the technology work in practice,” said Sashi Kumar, Managing Director, Indeed India. He added that “the 19-fold rise in postings shows that employers are moving quickly as they now need answers regarding the skills, day-to-day responsibilities, and career path the role can offer.”

Forward Deployed Engineers sit between AI tools and enterprise customers, embedding with client teams to integrate models into existing systems, connect them with business workflows and ensure production stability. Indeed listed the required skill cluster as Python or Java programming, data engineering, machine learning, generative AI, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), AI agents, cloud technologies, APIs, integrations and full-stack development.

On compensation, Indeed’s FDE sample was too small to publish a reliable median salary. Glassdoor India lists an average base pay of about ₹12 lakh a year for the role, with a range of ₹9 lakh to ₹16 lakh based on 28 submissions updated in January 2026. Industry estimates for senior FDE roles at global AI firms with India delivery centres run considerably higher, reflecting the specialised technical and customer-facing skill mix.

The trend sits alongside broader workforce commitments from India’s top IT services firms, several of which have announced plans to build large FDE teams to anchor enterprise AI deployment work. For HR teams, the data reinforces that AI hiring in 2026 is less about generic ML engineering and more about professionals who can bridge technology and business.
