Daimler India Commercial Vehicles (DICV), the maker of BharatBenz trucks and buses, will invest around ₹4,000 crore in Tamil Nadu to expand manufacturing, research and development and technology capabilities, and expects the investment to create about 400 jobs.
The commitment is part of a non-binding facilitation Memorandum of Understanding signed with the Government of Tamil Nadu at the Vetri Tamil Nadu Investment Conclave 2026, as reported by ANI. Once implemented, the fresh capital takes DICV’s cumulative investment in India to more than ₹14,500 crore.
The expansion centres on the company’s 400-acre integrated manufacturing and R&D site at Oragadam near Chennai, which employs more than 4,000 people. The new spend will support BharatBenz product development, manufacturing capacity, R&D, local infrastructure and future technology readiness.
“BharatBenz was built for India, and this investment reflects our confidence in the next phase of the country’s commercial vehicle growth,” said Torsten Schmidt, Managing Director and CEO of Daimler India Commercial Vehicles.
DICV, a wholly owned subsidiary of Germany’s Daimler Truck AG, has put over 220,000 BharatBenz trucks and buses on Indian roads since launching sales in 2012, serving freight movement, construction, mining, logistics and passenger mobility. The company works with more than 400 local suppliers and localises around 92% of its product value through its Indian supplier network, supported by over 420 dealer and service touchpoints.
Schmidt tied the decision to rising demand. “As infrastructure, logistics, mining, construction and passenger mobility continue to expand, Indian customers need trucks and buses that deliver higher uptime, safety, reliability and operating efficiency,” he said.
