Gurugram Police issued an advisory on July 7 urging corporate offices and private establishments to allow employees to work from home as heavy monsoon rain triggered widespread waterlogging and traffic congestion across the city.

The advisory came as the India Meteorological Department issued a yellow alert for Delhi-NCR, forecasting moderate rainfall, thunderstorms and winds gusting up to 50 kmph through July 9. Extensive waterlogging and a road cave-in on the Delhi-Jaipur Highway near Narsinghpur forced authorities to shut two lanes, triggering hours-long traffic snarls between Hero Honda Chowk and the Kherki Daula Toll Plaza. Major stretches, including Golf Course Extension Road, Iffco Chowk, Udyog Vihar, Sohna Road, and Old Delhi Road, also saw significant flooding.

We strongly urge the corporate sector and private establishments to encourage Work from Home (WFH) arrangements for their employees for the next few days. Minimising non-essential vehicular movement will greatly assist our traffic management teams in maintaining traffic flow and ensuring emergency services remain unobstructed,” the Gurugram Police advisory stated.

The advisory is not mandatory. Gurugram hosts a dense concentration of IT, GCC, and corporate offices, many of which have adopted flexible remote-work policies in recent years, partly in response to the city’s recurring monsoon disruptions. It arrives amid an active pattern of similar administrative advisories this monsoon season across other Indian cities facing extreme rainfall.

Companies with formal hybrid or remote-work policies are better positioned to respond quickly to such advisories, while those without are often faced with inconsistent employee compliance and last-minute confusion over attendance and safety expectations. IMD has forecast continued light-to-moderate rain with thunderstorms through July 9, with conditions expected to ease from July 10.
