The Karnataka government approved a series of employment focused measures in its first cabinet meeting, including approvals for large-scale public sector hiring and the establishment of a new employment exchange.
The hiring approvals span multiple state government departments and public sector undertakings, reflecting the Karnataka administration’s stated commitment to expanding employment opportunities and reducing youth unemployment in one of India’s largest and most economically significant states. The new employment exchange is intended to formalise job matching between employers and job seekers, particularly for candidates outside the major tech and services employment hubs.
Karnataka is India’s leading state for technology employment, hosting the bulk of Bengaluru’s tech and GCC workforce. However, the cabinet measures appear directed at broader workforce development including sectors and geographies outside the Bengaluru tech belt with a focus on public sector roles, infrastructure, and essential services.
The announcements come as India’s central government also scales up initiatives aimed at formalising employment and expanding social security coverage, including the recent Employees’ Enrolment Campaign targeting workers outside the ESIC and EPFO net.
