Tech Mahindra has rejected allegations of religious bias at its offices, after a series of social media posts claimed discriminatory hiring practices, unequal enforcement of workplace policies, and religious favouritism at its Goregaon BPO unit in Mumbai.
The controversy began when Bombay High Court advocate Ashutosh Dubey shared a post on X on April 12, citing a message purportedly received from an anonymous employee at the company’s Goregaon facility. The message alleged that over 60% of employees in one process were Muslim, that office policies were not applied uniformly, and that Muslim employees enjoyed preferential treatment during Ramzan, including daily iftar gatherings in the office canteen.
The employee also alleged that an HR official was responsible for skewed hiring decisions. Separate allegations subsequently emerged regarding the company’s Telangana office, accompanied by images circulating online.
A Tech Mahindra spokesperson responded: “This is with reference to recent social media posts alleging religious bias within Tech Mahindra. We take such concerns seriously and conducted an internal review, which found these claims to be inaccurate and unfounded.” The company also clarified that the image labelled ‘Footwear Free Zone,’ which circulated alongside the original post, did not belong to any of its offices.
Reiterating its internal values, the company said: “At Tech Mahindra, we are firmly committed to building an inclusive, respectful workplace where every individual is treated with dignity and fairness, without discrimination of any kind, including on the basis of religion.”
The development surfaces at a time when workplace conduct across India’s IT sector is drawing unusual public scrutiny. The allegations emerged even as the investigation into alleged sexual harassment and religious coercion at TCS’s Nashik BPO unit continues to widen. Infosys, too, recently reiterated its zero-tolerance stance after social media posts alleged harassment at its Pune BPM unit.
For now, Tech Mahindra says it will monitor adherence to its stated values. The company added that it would “continue to review our policies and processes to ensure that our values are upheld consistently, and that no coercive or inappropriate conduct is permitted or carried out in any manner whatsoever.”
