The Telangana Legislative Assembly has passed the Telangana Employees Accountability and Monitoring of Parental Support Bill, 2026, which allows authorities to deduct a portion of an employee’s salary if they are found to have neglected a parent.

Under the bill, salary deductions of up to 15% or ₹10,000, whichever is lower, can be ordered in verified cases of parental neglect. The deducted amount is transferred directly to the parent’s bank account, bypassing the employee entirely. The law applies across a wide spectrum of workers, including government and private-sector employees, as well as elected representatives such as MLAs, MPs, and local body members.

The initiative has been driven by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, who emphasised the need to protect parental rights through both social values and legal backing. Telangana becomes one of the few states in India to enact enforceable legislation linking employment income to family welfare obligations.

The move is likely to prompt compliance questions for HR and payroll teams in the state, particularly around the verification process and the mechanism for executing deductions.
