India’s food delivery industry has recorded a notable surge in employment over the past two years, according to a study. The sector’s workforce expanded by 27%, reaching about 1.37 million jobs in FY2023-24, up from around 1.08 million in FY2021-22.
The study titled Impact of Food Delivery Platforms on the Indian Economy: GDP, Employment and Taxes, has been conducted by Prosus, in partnership with the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER
It further shows that the industry’s job growth significantly outpaced broader national employment trends during the same period, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 12.3% compared with 7.9% for overall employment, Economic Times reported
This expansion comes with rapid growth in the sector’s economic footprint. Food delivery platforms generated over Rs. 1.2 Lakh Cr in gross output in FY24, and the industry is growing faster than the broader economy
Market activity continues to be predominantly driven by major players such as Zomato and Swiggy, although other entrants are attempting to carve out a niche.
According to Prosus, as the industry scales further, portable social security benefits for gig workers could help improve economic security without undermining the flexibility that characterises platform-linked work.
