As the placement season begins at IITs across India, more than 20 companies have been preemptively banned from participating this year.

The companies banned this year are the same ones that had offered students jobs last year but then rescinded them later. Some of the job offers were rescinded as late as June or July of 2025, and even at the time of joining.

Given the IIT policy of not allowing already placed students to sit for further interviews, the late withdrawals of job offers jeopardise both career options and the mental health of affected students, as per officials. As such, IITs have unanimously decided to bar said companies from the current placement cycle.

The companies in the banned list were finalised when they had revoked offers at more than one IIT. Some of the companies in the list are data analytics and software-based firms. As per an IIT professor involved in the placement process, the names of the companies were cross-verified by placement coordinators at 15 IITs.

“We looked at their past records, too. Some of these companies had a history of revoking offers, and six to seven IITs had already banned them from participation. Offers have been revoked by some companies where some alumni are working. There were also a few companies that reduced salary packages offered in the letter. The placement cells are trying to speak to higher authorities in these companies,” explained the professor.

The IITs seemingly did try to help the affected students through various methods. An IIT Bombay alumnus shared how his job offer of ₹30 lakhs was rescinded on May 29, 2025, two days before the scheduled joining on June 1, 2025. He added that IIT Bombay did offer him help, though he was fortunately able to bag a better offer through an alumnus, and as such did not need the aid.

The banned companies can still hire IIT students through the off-campus process.
